Health Literacy
/ Citizenship Classes
The Health Literacy
English as a Second Language (ESL) class, currently held at the Central
Texas Technology Center (CTTC), will be relocating to the Westside
Community Center (WCC) effective January 2008. WCC is a satellite campus
of the CTTC, and “with space being at a premium at the college, it was
decided that WCC would be the perfect site for our medical ESL program,”
says Mike Morphew, Director of the CTTC.
Now in
its fourth year, the Health Literacy ESL class combines instruction of
the English language with medical terminology along with introducing the
students to the many entry-level health support positions that are
available in the New Braunfels and surrounding area. “This innovative
program not only teaches the students the English necessary for everyday
living in the United States, but it also gives them a foot in the door
for training in the Health Services field by introducing them to the
terminology in various medical careers such as CNA, Medication Aid, and
Dental Assistant,” says Christia Moore, Director for the Adult Education
program. Communication skills, safety regulations, job responsibilities,
and how to work as a member of a team are also taught.
In addition to the
Health Literacy classes, English Literacy Civics will also be included
in the coursework. The Civics component teaches students about the
American government along with instruction for what they will need to do
to become a naturalized citizen. The instructor is Donna Zech, who has
been with the Adult Education program for four years.
Registration for this
16-week program will be at the WCC on January 28 and 29 at 9:00 a.m.
Classes will begin January 30 and will be held Monday through Thursday,
8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. For more information about the classes, call the
Office of Adult Education at 830-379-1220, Ext. 307, or the CTTC at
830-609-2100.
